Chat Tuesday with Tom Gardner

Tom GarnerTonight we welcome Bexley’s own, Tom Gardner! Tom graduated from OSU in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in Technology Education and has been at the PCJ for three years now where he has completed a two-year Pre-Theology program and is now in his first year of Theology studies. Tom joins us tonight to share a little about his journey to the priesthood.

Please welcome Tom Gardner!

Hey everyone, good to be on for the Chat tonight!

Question #1 – Tom, you shared with me earlier that you had people telling you way back in Sunday school that they thought you’d become a priest, but you didn’t discern until you were in college. Can you tell us a little about that journey and what factor may have led you to joining the Seminary?

Sure! It was definitely an exciting journey for me to get to the seminary. Although I can remember a couple of people (like my 8th grade CCD teacher, Matt Palmer) mentioning the priesthood to me, I wasn’t at a place in my relationship with God at that time to be able to make the decision to enter seminary. In middle and high school, I was more concerned with planning out my life for myself, without really asking what God wanted for my life.

Question #2- You are the second oldest of five kids. How has your family been able to support you throughout your journey?

My family had always been a great support in the journey. My parents are constantly telling me how proud they are of me. I know that they are praying for me every day.
My siblings are very much on board as well. We are very close, especially me and my brother, Billy. They have also been great about praying for me and encouraging me along the way. This is my shout out to Billy Gardner, Julie Gardner, Laura Gardner and Amy!

Question #3 – You have a Bachelors degree in Technology Education. In what ways do you plan (if any) on using this in the future?

Well, the Holy Father, Pope Benedict, is all about using the new communication technologies to help people encounter Christ in our world today. So you better believe I’ll be using Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and anything else I can to reach out to others God-willing one day as a priest. I think technology has a great potential for helping to reach out to those who otherwise may have never heard the Gospel.

We whole heartedly agree here at Face Forward! We LOVE using Social Media to spread the Good News!

Question #4 – You were heavily involved in the St. Paul’s Outreach group at Ohio State. What were the benefits you gained from being involved with this group?

Too many to count. First and foremost my relationship with God was deepened a lot. By seeing the men I was living with going to mass, confession and adoration on a regular basis, I was encouraged to do the same myself. And this brought me in contact with God in a deeper way then ever before. The good foundation of my faith laid by my parents through their teaching me to pray and love God was deepened and strengthened

You told me earlier that you guys got up four mornings a week and prayed together to start the day and you also ate dinner together three nights a week. That sounds like a wonderful “family” to have.

Indeed. We called each other “brother” for good reason. They really are my brothers in Christ. Many of those men are still doing great things in Columbus: leading youth groups, being DREs, raising families, etc. Praise God!

Question #5 – What would you say to someone who was quietly discerning a life in the priesthood but wasn’t sure what to do to explore the idea?

I would encourage him to not be afraid, for one thing. This was the constant message of Blessed Pope John Paul the Great. The Lord’s plan for his life is one of deep fulfillment and happiness! This has definitely been the case for me. I can honestly say that being in the seminary has been the most fulfilling time in my life.
Practically speaking, I would encourage him to send an email to Father Noble, our Vocation Director. His email is noble@seekholiness.com. He could also call the Vocations Office at (614) 221-5565. Again, don’t be afraid! Calling Fr. Noble to ask about the priesthood isn’t going to put you on some “vocation watch-list.” Fr. Noble is a great guy to help you discern what God’s call is for you, whatever that might be. So, for those thinking about the priesthood, don’t be afraid to talk to a priest or a trusted friend who is serious about his or her faith: these are the people who want to help you to answer God’s call!

Great ideas! We are also having another “Coffee and Conversation” with Fr. Noble on April 23rd at Crimson Cup. This is a very relaxed and casual atmosphere to ask any questions of Fr. as well as some of the Seminarians that will be in attendance.

Finally, I would encourage high school seniors to come on a live-in weekend at the Josephinum. This is a great time to hang out with seminarians in their own environment and get a small taste of what seminary life is like. These typically happen in the fall. Stay posted to Face Forward for more info on that next Fall!

As some of our Face Forward members may have seen, you at one time were able to eat a cupcake in one bite. Can you still do it and would you be willing to let us capture it on film again? It makes for great viewing, except if you’ve given up sweets for Lent. ☺

That wouldn’t be any fun! We would definitely have to up the ante. I would say let’s see if I can down TWO cupcakes in under a minute! But we would have to wait until Easter… :-)

In case some of you missed it, here is Tom Gardner! Cupcake Challenge

Tom, it’s been great chatting with you tonight! We look forward to watching you try the 2 cupcakes, after Lent of course. We will all be praying for you as you continue on your journey towards the Priesthood. Thank you!

Thank you guys for having me on! Have a blessed Lent and a glorious Easter!

Chat Tuesday – Director of Vocations, Fr. Paul Noble

Tonight, Face Forward’s seminarian Jeremiah Guappone chats with Director of Vocations, Fr. Paul Noble on the last Chat Tuesday of the season.

Jeremiah Guappone Chat Tuesday: Welcome Fr. Noble, so glad that you could be with us tonight.

FrPaul Noble Howdy! Glad to be here!

Jeremiah Guappone Chat Tuesday: So Father, tell us about the big event this Saturday.

FrPaul Noble This Saturday the Bishop of Columbus will ordain two men priests for our diocese

Jeremiah Guappone Can you tell us a little about each of them?

FrPaul Noble Ty Tomson is from the east side and Ryan is from the west…

FrPaul Noble Both have finished their studies at the Josephinum and are waiting for their first assignments

FrPaul Noble It happens at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Cathedral–all are welcome!

Jeremiah Guappone Chat Tuesday: Fr. What had been the long term (Seminary) and the short term (past month) preparation?

FrPaul Noble The long term preparation started with admission to the seminary

FrPaul Noble I want to emphasize that because by entering the seminary there was still that process of discernment: is this the right response to God’s call.

FrPaul Noble So that takes 6 to 8 years–lots of time to discern!

Jeremiah Guappone It certainly is… since I just finished the first year I am at the other end.

FrPaul Noble The immediate stuff is like most celebrations: invitations, receptions, music, etc. with the religious dimension receiving much more attention

Jeremiah Guappone Chat Tuesday to Fr. Noble: What could there first assignments be like and when will they start?

FrPaul Noble First assignments are typically in a larger parish with the pastor needing help to meet the needs of the parish

FrPaul Noble So the first stuff is more sacramental and educational–we wait for the administrative stuff for later

Jeremiah Guappone I know that they are both really excited to be Ordained and to serve the people of God.

FrPaul Noble They will start with the second Tuesday in July–the day when all the new assignments in the Diocese of Columbus go into effect

Jeremiah Guappone What will they do until that time Father?

FrPaul Noble And they are very excited about finding-out where their first assignments wil be!

FrPaul Noble Between now and the first assignment they will probably attend ordinations of their classmates, get stuff organized and ready to move, and send thank you notes…

Jeremiah Guappone Spend time with the Seminarians…

Jeremiah Guappone Chat Tuesday: Can you tell us about your own Ordination Father Noble?

FrPaul Noble It was a long time ago…30 years! I was the only one to be ordained at the time, and I was ordained for the P.I.M.E. Missionaries in Detroit

Jeremiah Guappone Chat Tuesday: Do you remember a certain part? Or a strongest memory?

FrPaul Noble I joined the Diocese of Columbus 4 years later, in 1985

Jeremiah Guappone Chat Tuesday: It has been very good for us!!

FrPaul Noble My strongest memory is the ordaining Bishop did not like M.C.’s (Masters of Ceremonies), so I had to direct the servers at my own ordination…

Jeremiah Guappone Chat Tuesday: HAHAHAHA, I don’t think that will happen on Saturday… although they may each do a bit of directing as it is in their character….

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth That is a lot to be doing at your special time. How did you know what to do? – FF admin

Jeremiah Guappone I bet that it made the whole thing fairly complicated!!
Jeremiah Guappone Chat Tuesday: Father, what will the Ordination Mass be like? Who will attend? Will there be many priest?

FrPaul Noble The Ordination Mass will be beautiful!!! We hope many will attend!

Jeremiah Guappone Chat Tuesday: Can yo/u tell everyone what your part will be, and what part of the Mass it is in

FrPaul Noble It will include the calling of the candidates, the testifying that they are worthy (my part!), the calling on the saints for their prayers, the invocation of the Holy Spirit, the vesting, etc., etc. Come and see!

Jeremiah Guappone It is at 10 am everyone!!!

Jeremiah Guappone Chat Tuesday: Hey Face Forward fans, what questions do you have in our remaining time before 8pm.

FrPaul Noble Parking is available behind the Cathedral and at the lot (SW corner) of 5th and Long

Jeremiah Guappone Chat Tuesday: A Good thing to know.

FaceForward:ConnectingCatholicYouth http://faceforwardcolumbusblog.com/2011/05/the-columbus-diocese-invites-you-to-the-ordination/

Jeremiah Guappone Chat Tuesday: Father Noble, do you have any funny stories about these two?

FrPaul Noble Also, after the ordination, there is a reception in the undercroft. There is also the STRONG tradition of receiving the FIRST BLESSING of the newly ordained priests. Don’t miss that!

FrPaul Noble One of those things…I won’t tell funny stories about them so they won’t tell funny stories about me…

Jeremiah Guappone Haha

FrPaul Noble But last summer, at the seminarian gathering and the Mass with the Bishop, I almost fell through the chair after the opening prayer. I thought Deacon Ryan would never stop laughing before he had to proclaim the Gospel.

Jeremiah Guappone I remember that, I was new, but I still laughed!!
Jeremiah Guappone Chat Tuesday: Well Father, any closing thoughts?

FrPaul Noble While the ordination is the culmination of the program of priestly formation, and they are indeed priests, the faith journey continues. It is vital that we continue to pray for them so their first assignments are challenging and affirming and the newly ordained continue to grow in their faith and in their love for the people entrusted to their care.

Jeremiah Guappone Chat Tuesday: Well Father Noble, thanks so much for being with us tonight. Face Forward fans stay tuned this week for more on the ordination!

FrPaul Noble Thanks for your help, Jeremiah! See you Saturday~

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youthhttp://faceforwardcolumbusblog.com/2011/05/the-columbus-diocese-invites-you-to-the-ordination/

Jeremiah Guappone See you then Father, but remember that we are going to talk at OSU about vocations tomorrow.

FrPaul Noble yep!

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth This concludes our last Chat Tuesday of the season. We will continue this week celebrating the Ordination of both Ty Tomson and Ryan Schmit.

Chat Tuesday – Aaron Richards, CYSC

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Time For Chat Tuesday! Tonight we’re chatting with Aaron Richards, Program Director for CYSC (Catholic Youth Summer Camps). Aaron is also Youth Minister at Saint Agatha. Welcome Aaron!

Aaron Richards Thanks! So Excited!

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Chat Tuesday ? To Aaron Richards: How did you get involved in CYSC?

Aaron Richards Well, to make a long story short, I rose through the ranks of servitude… About one month before the first year of CYSC, all the way back in 2001, a man named Bob Moraine called to ask if I’d be interested in serving as a counselor that summer, and the rest is history. I feel like the Holy Spirit may have had something to do with it as well. I’ve been involved since the founding, and loved every second!

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Chat Tuesday ? To Aaron Richards: What’s your current role with CYSC?

Aaron Richards At camp, I work in the role of Program Director. This means that what you experience after walking through the doors for our evening program is my responsibility. I work with a crew of incredibly talented post high school staff members to make Club, whether through music, drama or testimony, an all around incredible experience. Throughout the year I work with our staff and board of directors to keep everything running smoothly, and to create events that will keep us fed in between summers.

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth And those events are Jesus Jams and Holiness Revolution?

Aaron Richards Yeah, that’s right. For the past 7 years, we’ve run events through the school year that keep our campers in contact and plugged in to their own local ministries, and Jesus Jam and Holiness Revolution have been it for the past few.

Aaron Richards Get ready for some really exciting changes next Fall, however!

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth He’s teasing us …

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth the anticipation will build until fall, we guess!

Aaron Richards Yes… i mustn’t reveal too much however.

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth How about a hint?

Claire Turnbull You’re not going to tell?

Aaron Richards let’s just say we’ve booked the columbus convention center for a number of dates next season.

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Wow! Sounds like huge gatherings!

Lori S Stevenson Is Holiness Revolution still happening? The website gives VERY little information.

Aaron Richards Ah yes… well let’s just say you’ll hardly be able to recognize holiness revolution. and we’ll take care of that website issue in short order.

Claire Turnbull Do you manage the websites?

Aaron Richards among other things. yes.

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Chat Tuesday ? To Aaron Richards: Tell us how you figured out your path in life.

Aaron Richards God led me in a very strong way through my work in ministry. He actually called me to marry my lovely wife when we met in our first summer at camp together! Yes, CYSC and the two of us share an anniversary. God built upon what he’d started in a very clear way that led me to the work and vocation that I’m living today!

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Chat Tuesday ? To Aaron Richards: Can you tell us the basics about CYSC?

Aaron Richards ‎6 days & 5 nights focused on building a high adventure faith through high adventure activities. Doesn’t get much more basic than that. Jesus wants to meet us at our best. Camp gives us the opportunity to get there!

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Chat Tuesday ? To Aaron Richards: How much does it cost?

Aaron Richards A week of camp costs $495. Now, before you freak out and sign off, keep in mind how much it costs to feed your little habit of eating food three times a day! In all seriousness, the experience is well worth the price. When we say high adventure activities, we aren’t bluffing. It costs a lot to feed those thirsty octane-loving jet skis.

Aaron Richards For those who might be interested in attending this summer, but for whom finances may be in issue, we have many generous individuals and parishes who help to sponsor those who might be unable to come otherwise. (If you’re one of those generous individuals, WE NEED TO TALK!)

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth So there are numerous reasons to talk to Aaron …

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Do those generous parishes and individuals contact you to give?

Aaron Richards haha. I’m a very talkative guy…

Aaron Richards Yes. Quite. Or go ahead and sign on to the website at www.cysc.com to find more information about support and giving!

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth http://cysc.com/Click on donations & support to give to CYSC

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth
Chat Tuesday ? To Aaron Richards: What makes CYSC different from any other summer camp?

Aaron Richards Activities: No where else will you find Jet Skis, Paintball, High Ropes, Rock Climbing, The Blob (Heavyweights anyone??), Zorbs (Think giant inflatable human sized hamster balls), Tubing, and Canoeing, among many others, at the same place at the same time with hundreds of your closest friends. It just is not physically possible.

Aaron Richards Faith: CYSC is led by a group of individuals who know and love high school and middle school ministry and who are open to the work of the Holy Spirit. Our messages are clear, consistent, challenging, and up-building. Whether you are seeking to strengthen your relationship with God, or jumping in for the first time, CYSC is where I see young people living the Gospel and experiencing the Sacraments. And it is not by accident.\

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Chat Tuesday ? To Aaron Richards: How would you describe CYSC in three words?

Aaron Richards Jesus. Church. Mass-Monkey…

Aaron Richards Well fine. I suppose I should go back to our tagline, taken from the words of our great Patron, Blessed Pope John Paul II: LIVE THE ADVENTURE

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Chat Tuesday ? To Aaron Richards: Which do you like better … ziplining or paintball?

Aaron Richards Well, I would have said paintball until having the opportunity to lead paintball for 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 4 weeks, for 3 years! I have never experienced so many welts before… so, my decision is:

Aaron Richards Paintball. The CYSC speedball course is renowned in all the world. No amount of pain could keep me away.

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Chat Tuesday ? To Aaron Richards: Daily rosary or Eucharistic adoration?

Aaron Richards Wow, Don’t make me pick between momma and JESUS! I love Mary and the Rosary is one of my favourite prayers. I believe that I will cheat and say that the Rosary is one the best ways to dive into Jesus in Adoration. Is that fair?

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Fair enough!

Lisa Ann Black Ludwig Amen brother

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Chat Tuesday ? To Aaron Richards: Who are the camp counselors? Anyone we would know?

Aaron Richards Our camp counselors are an incredibly dedicated group of high school and college students (and a few pros) who dedicate a week of their life to giving our campers every ounce of their love and attention. (and this is no easy task) There are a group of seminarians each year who serve as counselors and staff members as well. We had over 75 applications for camp counselor positions this summer alone!

Aaron Richards Paintball!

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Love it!

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Looks serious …

Aaron Richards quite.

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Chat Tuesday ? To Aaron Richards: If someone can’t make it to camp this summer but is interested in the CYSC organization, how can he/she get involved?

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Chat Tuesday ? To Aaron Richards: If someone can’t make it to camp this summer but is interested in the CYSC organization, how can he/she get involved?

Aaron Richards If you can’t make it to camp this summer, I pity you…

Aaron Richards Yes! You can get involved in CYSC in all kinds of ways. If you’re in high school or middle school check out our website www.cysc.com to see what programs we’ve got coming up next school year that will help to Live the Adventure in the off season.

Aaron Richards If you’re a parent, go to www.cysc.com to learn all the ways you can force your son or daughter to be involved, and how you can help us to Build the Adventure of CYSC.

Aaron Richards If you are a millionaire, or a person who happens to own a camp site who is looking for a large(ish) tax deduction next spring, head to www.cysc.com, or better yet, just call me.

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Or message you on facebook?

Aaron Richards yes!

Claire Turnbull What do you do to keep it fresh for returning campers?

Aaron Richards We’ve got all of our program on a 6 year rotation. So only the super hard-core will ever see anything twice!

Claire Turnbull and they probably wouldn’t remember anyway!

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Chat Tuesday ? To Aaron Richards: We understand CYSC is all in the family for you.

Aaron Richards Yes… As I said in an earlier post, my wife and I met at our first year serving at camp together (she wasn’t my wife yet at that point). Our two lovely little children have also been huge advocates of camp in their combined 40 months of life. Leah, our oldest was approximately (exactly) 4 days old when she attended her first 3 weeks of camp. That’s right, at one, our daughter Leah had spent over 3/4 of her life at CYSC… And our son Digory was just a few days shy of being born there, but decided to go for the slightly more comfortable hospital route.

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Chat Tuesday ? To Aaron Richards: Last question—who is your favorite saint?

Aaron Richards Ah, well, I hate to be cliché, but Blessed Pope John Paul II is my hero! Aside from being the biggest advocate for youth ministry the world has ever known, and the man who wrote our motto (Live the Adventure), he also put together the Theology of the Body, my favourite thing EVER.

Aaron Richards John Paul’s challenge and guidance set forth in the Theology of the Body is the answer to EVERY challenge to our faith. (I may be slightly biased) I could, have, and would like to go on for 10 hours minimum on this stuff but for the sake of our Chat Tuesday, will keep it brief for now. Rather than preach here, I’ll let you ask me in person. When I see you. At camp. Register @ www.cysc.com

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth Yes, Theology of the Body is an excellent guide … God’s intent for how we view the physical body he gave us. Deep but simple at the same time.
Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth This ends Chat Tuesday! Many thanks to Aaron Richards for being our guest this evening!

To all attending CYSC this summer: have a blast … aiming at Aaron on the paintball course!

Lizz Turnbull kk

Aaron Richards curse you!

Aaron Richards haha no I’ll take it. and love it.

Lizz Turnbull lol

Lizz Turnbull wait does that mean that its over?

Aaron Richards yes… sadly.

Lizz Turnbull awww i didnt even know about these….is there gonna be another one next tuseday?

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth The chat may be over, but you will be able to find Aaron at camp for three weeks this summer!

Aaron Richards four. unless i die.

Lizz Turnbull i know im going to week 2

Lizz Turnbull DONT GO TO THE LIGHT AARON!!!!

Aaron Richards haha

Face Forward: Connecting Catholic Youth We will chat with Father Noble next Tuesday … tune in Lizz!

Lizz Turnbull kk

Next week (May 24) will be our last Chat Tuesday before the summer break. Check in and chat with Fr. Noble as we discuss Ordination and also summer plans.
