Ordinary Teens Doing Extraordinary Things – Bridget Geyer

BridgetName:  Bridget Geyer
School:  Bishop Watterson
Grade:  10
Parish:  St. Brendan

What service did you perform?
I have been a volunteer at Children’s Hospital for two years.

How did you get involved?
I wanted to find a way to give back to the community because I’ve been so blessed. I want to pursue a future in medicine and I love interacting with kids, so Children’s was a good environment. After a series of applications, essays and interviews, I was accepted into the volunteer program.

Why is this extraordinary?
Nationwide Children’s hospital is one of the leading pediatric hospitals in the country. To be able to be a part of such an innovative and successful program is very exciting. Combined with the fact that my volunteer activities allow me to pursue my passions, it truly is an extraordinary opportunity.

How can others get involved?
There are countless chances for us to give back in our everyday lives. You don’t have to have an official position or badge in order to perform small acts of kindness. If you start looking for ways to help others, big or small,  God will lead you to opportunities to give back to others who most need it.

What is the most rewarding thing about it?
The most rewarding part of my experience is just knowing that I am helping others who are going through difficult times. Working at the hospital has really made me appreciate my health and that of my family and friends. I also love seeing how times of crisis, family and friends come together to support one another. It truly allows me to see God active in our lives.

Name: Emma McCarthy
School: Bishop Watterson
Grade: Senior
Parish: St. Brigid of Kildare

What service do you perform?
Well I’ve actually done a wide variety of different things. Some of my highlights are altar serving at St. Brigid, cooking meals for the families at the Ronald McDonald House, being a brand ambassador for Face Forward , and working at Realtor Care Day with my dad (basically every year they pick a project and they help low income families or communities that are in need of help and do stuff like landscaping, painting, etc. ).

Why is it Extraordinary?
Service is extraordinary because isn’t all about you. You are taking the time to help someone else who isn’t as blessed as you are and you are able to make that persons life a little bit easier. It’s such a blessing that we are able to serve others and realize how many blessings we have received.

How can others get involved?
Others can get involved by always seeking out new ways to serve. Parish’s always post new service opportunities in their bulletins. Also high schools are always contacted by people in the community who need help so it never hurts to ask around and see what kind of opportunities are out there.

What is the most rewarding thing?
The most rewarding thing about service is knowing that you are helping other people and showing Christ’s face to those who want to see it most. There is nothing better than seeing the smiles on peoples faces after you have helped them. The joy and thank you’s received are all I need to keep coming back and doing more.

I got involved because of the Sophomore Service training program at BWHS.

Why is this extraordinary?
The volunteers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital play an important part in the hospital. Although the tasks they perform may be small, the volunteers provide comfort and friendship to the patients and parents.

How can others get involved?
Anyone ages 15 or older can become a volunteer at the hospital in numerous different areas of the hospital.

What is the most rewarding thing about it?
The most rewarding part of being a volunteer at the hospital is forming bonds with the patients and the therapists that I help.
